Darling I Love You Andrew Jackson Jihad ChordsDarling, I Love You’ – Andrew Jackson Jihad. There are some moments in your musical experience which turn out have a profound experience on you, only you don’t know it at the time. Sometimes you might hear of a band, only to one day become a member of it (à la Henry Rollins in Black Flag), or you may just hear a band’s music, not realising the sort of impact that they will one day have on you. Back in about 2. 00. I was in the end stages of frequenting the forums of Ultimate Guitar. Over the years, it had gone from being a rather irreverent forum of music lovers to becoming just another place for people to share poorly- constructed jokes and make lame attempts at massaging their own egos. One of the last things I did on this forum though was look at a post called the ‘folk music recommendation thread’, or something similar. I like telling dirty jokes. And I like smoking crystal meth, But darling I love you. And I like laughing at retards. Given my love for the Mountain Goats, I thought this would be a good place to discover some new music. One user in particular was doing their best at recommending a genre I had not heard of before called ‘folk- punk’. This person was suggesting music by the likes of This Bike Is A Pipe Bomb, Wingnut Dishwashers Union, and a band named Andrew Jackson Jihad. With their name piquing my interest, I continued. This user had suggested a song called ‘I Love You’*, and claimed that people would love due to their lyrics, which included the likes of “I like telling dirty jokesand I like smoking crystal meth, but darling, I love you.” I was intrigued, but didn’t care for it at the time, so I moved on to something different. A few months later, I was in a position which saw a friend ask me to play them some music. I jokingly asked them whether they would like to hear something by Andrew Jackson Jihad, to which they said yes. Taken aback, I showed them that first song I had heard, at which point the song just sort of clicked with me. I instantly felt the need to listen to more of this band and hear everything they had released – so I did. I fell in love with the band in the process. I absorbed their first album, the rough Candy Cigarettes & Capguns, the more evolved People Who Can Eat People Are The Luckiest People In The World, and the ‘Dylan Goes Electric’- esque Can’t Maintain (which I do maintain is my all- time favourite). Soon after, they released Knife Man which, while still great, is my least favourite record of theirs. By the time it was released, I had begun to buy their records en masse, beginning quite a collection in the process. These days my obsession has grown so strong that I have gained a reputation between some fans as being one of their most dedicated collectors. I’ve always found it funny that this one band, who have gone in to become one of my all time favourites, were at first dismissed by my quick judgement. I’ve never known why this was, and I doubt I ever will, but I have always wondered where I would be if that friend had never asked me to play them some music. I might even be into Insane Clown Posse for all I know. Likewise, their music expanded my taste exponentially too. Through their releases, I discovered fantastic bands I would never have heard of otherwise, such as Treasure Mammal, Roar, Porches, Fathers Day, Malakai, iji, and French Quarter. Truly, discovering this band one of the greatest things I feel I could ever have done. Worth noting also is that I made this list of songs well over 1. By some coincidence, the appearance of this song coincides with the fact I am actually seeing the band in concert tonight. Clearly, it was meant to be.*A small note should be made here. Firstly, the track’s name at the time was relatively unknown. The band had not named their original tracks on the release, so fans gave the track’s their own name. The band later released the record for free on their website, using what seemed like shorthand names for the tracks. Later, the record would be reissued on a compilation album that collected the record and some rarities, where this track was given an official name for the first time. As such, the unofficial name for the song was how I first discovered it, with the official name for the track being used here. Likewise, when this CD was originally released, it was only released in a limited distribution. In my obsessive collecting of the band’s works, I have acquired both a copy with a red cover (the version used by the band on their website, and what seems to be the first edition), and a white cover (what appears to be a second edition). I’ve used the artwork for the second edition here because, well basically, I prefer it. Lastly, despite the band changing their name to AJJ in 2. I have used their former name here due to the fact that’s what they were called at the time of this track’s release.
